The Monarch Butterflies need your help!

Join us on Thursday, April 20, from 5:30-6:00 PM in the Ligonier Valley Libary's Community Room to learn how you can become a Monarch Waystation.

A Waystation provides host plants and nectar sources for monarchs which can help to increase their success in producing successive generations.

Waystations are easy to create. They can be any size, but at least 100 square feet is  needed to be truly effective; there is no upper size limit. Waystations can also be incorporated into an existing garden but they must be located in full sun.

from PennState Extension Master Gardner Program

We are happy to host this program in partnership with the PennState Extension Master Gardeners and our local Weeders & Seeders Garden Club of Ligonier! This program is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome, even those who are not "master" gardeners!

The program will include a brief review of the Monarch butterfly’s life cycle from egg to adult and its migration to and from Mexico. However, the emphasis will be on becoming a Monarch Watch Waystation for the Monarchs, establishing a summer habitat in the garden, and migration through the area. The Monarch Watch Waystation application will be used as a guide on what is required to be certified, including the type of milkweed host plants for the caterpillars, suggested nectar annual and perennial plants for the adult butterflies, and sustainable management practices that Monarch Watch recommends. The Monarch butterfly's plight during their migration through our country and in their Central Mexican overwintering site will conclude the program.
